Quote: | SPFL could be blue card guinea pigs as IFAB head to Scotland to thrash out sin bin plan |
Football chiefs will head to the Bonnie Banks next month to nail down plans to introduce blue cards to the game.
International Football Association Board law makers will hold their AGM at Loch Lomond on March 2 with a major revamp of the rules at the top of the agenda. Beaks are poised to announce plans to trial blue cards – which will see players sent to a sin bin for 10 minutes for cynical fouls or showing dissent to match officials.
IFAB have been testing out the system in youth games in Wales and are set to unveil steps to roll out more trials – with next season’s FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup possible guinea pigs. Elite competition will be excluded from the initial testing but Scottish football could see trials down the levels. SFA chief Ian Maxwell chaired the meeting in London last November where the blue card idea was pushed forward – along with semi-automatic offside technology, body cams for referees and further changes to controversial handball calls.
And Scotland will also host the next set of high level talks when IFAB lands in Glasgow for their 138th annual general meeting – with huge changes on the agenda ahead of the 2024/25 season. The introduction of sin bins will be the major talking point – with the prospect of a new card for the first time since the 1970 World Cup, when yellow and red cards were initially rolled out.
IFAB have been pushing hard in recent years to clean up the behaviour of players on the pitch with stringent guidelines issued last summer with regards to how referees deal with players and coaching staff aiming abuse. Blue cards are seen as the next step with players facing the prospect of 10 minutes on the sidelines for being mouthy to officials.
The game’s chiefs are also keen to stamp out ‘tactical’ fouls – to cut down on streetwise sides who intentionally halt opponents with shirt pulls or tackles to stop counter attacks or wreck momentum. Legendary ref Pierluigi Collina – who is chairman of FIFA’s referees committee and on the IFA subcommittee – said: “The idea is to go deeper into all of the details because it’s easy to say we do it and it’s a bit more difficult how to regulate everything.
“But the idea is to start working on this as soon as possible to provide those who would be involved in the trial a protocol to be used. The idea is to get it soon. The trial was very successful in a grassroots competition. Now we are talking of a higher level, very probably professional or even high professional football.
“We need to draft something that works or is worthy for top football."

Looking forward to seeing how this trial works, especially if used as a deterrent for dissent. I've long advocated deliberate shirt pulls and the like are yellow cards, but it also makes sense for a sin bin option to limit cynical delaying and disruption tactics |

All for this.
The game needs cleaning up.
Far too many “ professional” fouls. The result of which leads to fewer goals on many occasions.
Skill is I believe, what punters want to see, not dirty fouls, shirt pulling, kicking the ball away, stealing ten yards at throw ins, etc etc.
Probably take years to implement coz there will always be those that prefer the cave man approach. _________________ Born a Rover Live a Rover Die a Rover |

Ug?🫣
Being serious though, I agree fully.
Looking at the egg ball game last week against Wales, Scotland got a penalty because the Welsh guy tripped the ball into the crowd to prevent a quick lineout in a dangerous position for Wales to defend. The ref followed the rules to the letter but many were advocating that a yellow sin bin card should also have been shown. Ref couldn't, as it's not currently one of the rules. _________________ Talk on! Talk on!

FIFA have said that it is premature to talk about introducing the blue card yet as it will be tried out in lower grade football first, however perhaps by that they mean Scotland.
A blue card sounds like a good idea and worth a try but with so many controversial issues at the moment, e.g., when and how to use VAR, what counts as a hand ball offence, I feel it would be better to get some of them resolved before introducing another layer of complexity to refereeing. There are bound to be grey areas around when to use the blue card instead of the yellow or red. As I understand it, the intention is not just to restrict its use to dissent. |

I think the sin bin idea is an absolute disaster.
It works in ice hockey because you don't have a running clock, but if it's introduced to football, you'll have players from the short handed team lying down injured so that the ball is in play for about three minutes of the ten they're understrength.
If a foul is deemed cynical, give a red card and as for dissent, the referees can easily apply the existing rules more strictly. _________________ Dougie Hill

The officials cant get yellows and red decisions or non decisions right as it is without introducing another card
Anyway,it ain,t going to happen
Be better going down the route of the egg chasers where theres a player down injured, game continues and play round the injured player _________________ THERES FIVE OF ME |

What a nonsense of a proposal which would lead to even more gamesmanship, slow the game down further all while introducing more grey areas.
They need to concentrate more on their current ‘rules’ which are all over the place at the moment, starting off with the handball one. |

I disagree with your first point Vinnie, but I think the play on around an injured player getting on field attention would be an improvement.
Everybody knows the injured player down is often for reasons other than an ACTUAL injury. ie, time wasting, getting a quick change of tactics across to the team etc.
The bottom line is whilst the amateur game is usually played in the right way, the professional side will do any and all “ tactics” that gives its own team some benefit.
The game is rife with time wasting, cynical fouling, pulling players down to stop threats, taking extra yardage, feigning “ assaults, ie elbows etc.
Not so much sport, more about points/ winning at any cost that you can get away with.
Football is about watching entertaining games and it would be a lot more enjoyable without the “ cheating” that goes on.
There would very likely be many more goals......the things that people want to see.
Football is by no means on its own with regards “ bad habits” there is plenty cheating that goes on in other sports.
Blue cards might well help clean up the game although mistakes would still undoubtedly happen , but fewer mistakes is better than much of the Krap that viewers have to put up with atm. _________________ Born a Rover Live a Rover Die a Rover |
