Sad to hear that Der Kaiser has passed away.
A giant in the game from times past. Played the sweeper rΓ΄le to perfection. He was always elegant and imperious on the ball and seemed to always have acres of space and time through his positioning and reading of the game. His man marking job, at the age of twenty, on Charlton in "that final" was, however, less successful. After that he moved back to play the sweeper rΓ΄le for the rest of his hugely successful career.
I can remember being seated a couple of rows behind him and Karl-Heinz Rumminige in the West stand when we played Bayer in the first leg game at Easter Road. I'm not sure but he may have been Bayern's president by then. _________________ Talk on! Talk on!

Sad news that another of the true footballing greats has gone.
I don't think the poor man ever fully got over having to go into the Bayern dressing room at halftime in the Olympic Stadium and bollock players for not getting close enough to Davie Kirkwood. _________________ Dougie Hill

As you can imagine, the death of Franz Beckenbauer is a big deal in Germany.
The match programme for the second leg vs. the Rovers in Munich contained a column written by him so I am fairly certain he was indeed club president at the time.
Ironic that the second footballer to win the World Cup as a player and manager should die only two days after the first, Mario Zagallo. |
